About Magnificat

History

For some years, Fr. Daniel Becker, Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Paul Parishes in the Worcester Diocese, had felt the need, based on this logic of the Gospel, to found a school for the children of his parishes. He was seriously concerned for the moral, spiritual and intellectual education of his young people. In years gone by, Warren had been blessed with a fine Catholic school at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, run by the Sisters of the Holy Ghost. With this school now closed, and a scarcity of other Catholic schools in the vicinity, especially for those of high school age, Father Becker realized that the need to establish a new school was great.

He consulted with the Bishop of Worcester, Robert McManus, and explored various possibilities, all the while being encouraged by parents in the area. Onto this scene entered Paul Jernberg, newly relocated to the United States after a term as Headmaster and Music Director at a Catholic boarding school in France. Mr. Jernberg brought with him the experience and vision of teaching in the classical tradition and a strong background in choral music. Matthew Hart, who had recently returned from five years of study in Rome under the patronage of Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, stepped forward to add his numerous talents to the team. Meanwhile, other parents and teachers offered their invaluable contributions at this early stage and all felt encouraged as many obstacles were overcome in a relatively short period of time.

After a spring and summer of intense planning and hard work by parents and faculty alike, Magnificat Academy opened its doors on September 8, 2005 in the Parish Hall and Rectory of St. Paul Church with 20 students. According to Mr. Jernberg, “the amazing way in which complementary people, resources and circumstances fit together brought a sense of energy, encouragement and gratitude to all of us.”
