Choir & Fine Arts

The study of the fine arts plays an important part in this endeavor by allowing the child to appreciate the dimension of beauty that abounds in nature and works of human creativity and genius. The visual arts, encompassing Drawing and Painting as well as Art History and Appreciation, are taught at every level. In Music classes, students are exposed to the works of the great composers, while also learning the foundational skills of reading and writing musical notation, and of vocal technique.

All students at Magnificat Academy participate in Choir, even those who might have been previously labeled as “tone deaf” or “not musically gifted.” It is amazing to see and hear how these young people are able to develop their skills in this area, through imitation, regular practice and coaching! Beginning with folk music, simple melodies and canons, students progress to more complex works, with an emphasis on sacred music. The choir's sacred repertoire ranges from Gregorian Chant to works by Palestrina, Bach, Mozart and other great composers, to more contemporary works of authentic depth and beauty. At the same time, folk music is never abandoned; rather, it is cultivated for the wonderful qualities that bring delight to school life and performances.

Indeed, music tends to permeate everything that is done at Magnificat Academy, with a “graceful” effect on the minds and hearts of students and staff. In the Liturgy, it enhances and strengthens prayer, and becomes a powerful means of communicating spiritual joy and helping others to pray. Because of this particular strength, an important dimension of the school’s mission is serving the Parish, Community and Church at large through regular performances at Mass, in concert and at various other events. Local nursing home residents are cheered by a monthly visit from the performing choir. For the benefit of families in the area the Choir School is open to children who are not enrolled in the Academy.
