Academics

The Academy pursues a classical model of education, based on the traditional “liberal arts”, i.e., the learning arts befitting a free man that have been normative in the western tradition since the time of the ancient Greeks. The classical curriculum covers the great history, science, literature, art, music and people of the past in order to hand on this heritage to students of today. At the same time it gives them tools of learning and clear thinking that help them to apply this knowledge to their lives and the problems and issues of the modern world. Just as deep roots allow a tree to grow tall and strong, so these deep educational roots help a student to reach a certain fullness of intellectual, creative and spiritual growth.

This classical model of education is not only a course of studies but also a way of progressing in step with the natural development of the child. In the classical method these stages are represented by the “Trivium” of Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric. In the early grades, the Grammar stage, the basic tools are presented in each subject area, engaging and developing the child's powers of observation, communication and memory. Then follows the Logic stage, in the middle grades, when these tools are put to use exercising the mind in analysis, discussion and argument. Here begins the use of the “Socratic Method” in which students learn to discuss and debate vital questions; the lively and engaging nature of this method is guided by rules of reason and respect. Finally in the Rhetoric stage, the student discovers the means to express what he has learned with clear and persuasive language. This timeless mode of study is one whose aim is not only to instruct the student, but to teach him to think; to free his mind from custom, passion, fashion, and error so as to be able to pursue the true, the good and the beautiful. At the same time, the Academy provides an education that conforms to state requirements and one which enables graduating students to enter competitive schools of higher education.
